The holiday season is a joyous time of year, for some, while for others it’s a time of sadness and hardship. Some of us are very fortune to not have to worry about how we are going to celebrate the holidays but for others it’s a time a year that they’d rather not see come. I encourage you to take some time this holiday season to support a family or families in need. I have listed some opportunities within the community where you can give and support. I also encourage you after the holiday season is over to continue to give and support some of these organizations because these families need help and support all throughout the year.
Donate toys to the CMPD Explorers Christmas Project. Since 1974, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the CMPD Police Explorers have partnered with the community to provide a Christmas for less fortunate families in Charlotte. The goal of CMPD Explorers Christmas Project is to provide assistance to families that are experiencing an emergency situation during the Holidays. These family referrals come from Police Officers and Firefighters that respond to emergency calls for service during the holidays. You can help by dropping off new, unwrapped toys for ages 14 and under, now through December 19th to any CMPD or Fire Station throughout Charlotte.
Donate your time by supporting children and families at Levine Children’s Hospital through reading, playing games, or coloring with them and their family. You can also assist office staff by answering phones, paging staff, making copies or filing, greeting patients, families and visitors and assisting in the transport and discharge of patients. Volunteers must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and masks are required at all times.
Donate new or gently used coat(s) to Steve’s Coats for Kids through WSOC TV. The donations that you share allow the Crisis Assistance Ministry to supply them to people and families in need.
Donate items to Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays. They are currently in need of soft-sided coolers for their meal delivery program and diapers and wipes for their pantries. You can purchase them from the website or donate money for them to purchase.
Support the Salvation Army. There are three different ways you can assist the Salvation Army. You can donate to the virtual Red Kettle to support women and children experiencing homelessness, youth programs and more. You can take on the Red Kettle Challenge by building your own team to raise funds. Or, you can donate gifts for children in need through the Angel Tree.
